The story of the bird
A Blue-and-Gold Macaw, teal-blue across the back and wings and deep golden-yellow beneath, with the bare white face etched in fine lines of black feather and the heavy black bill held against the breast. It is one of the great parrots of the South American lowlands, a bird of riverside forest and palm swamp that flies in pairs and calls across whole valleys.
The colour is the obvious draw, two clean blocks of blue and gold meeting at the throat, but the real pleasure in the plate is the face: the pale skin with its threads of dark feather, the calm pale eye, the sense of an animal that watches you back.
