About the bird
The Broad-tailed Hummingbird breeds in mountain meadows and pine-oak forests from the Rockies to Mexico, arriving in spring at lower elevations and moving to alpine meadows through early summer. Males hold territories around the richest flower patches and display with steep dive-displays that end in a sharp u-turn a few feet above the ground. It winters in Mexico, a bird weighing three grams moving across a continent twice a year.
