About the bird
The osprey is the only hawk that hunts fish almost exclusively, and one of the most widespread birds of prey on earth, found on every continent except Antarctica. It hovers, folds, and hits the water feet first, closing barbed pads and a reversible outer toe around its catch. Once badly hit by DDT, it has recovered strongly and now nests on channel markers, poles and platforms up and down the coast and the inland lakes.
