About the bird
The snail kite feeds almost entirely on apple snails, using its long curved bill to extract them from the shell. Its US range is limited to the freshwater marshes of Florida, where its fortunes track the health of the wetlands and the snails they hold, making it a closely watched indicator of the Everglades.
