The story of the bird
Maine’s legislature named the chickadee its state bird in 1927 - deliberately leaving the species unspecified in a state where two chickadee species share the spruce forest. The Maine Bird Records Committee lists 475 recorded species, including one of the only Atlantic Puffin breeding colonies remaining in the United States.
This plate gathers the signature birds of Maine onto a single sheet, drawn in the Audubon tradition of close observation and honest colour: Atlantic Puffin, Bicknell’s Thrush, Spruce Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Common Loon, and the Black-capped Chickadee.

How to hang it
A composite plate wants room to breathe. Give it a pale wall, warm white or sage, and hang it at eye height where the palette can carry. A brown or gold moulding suits the cream ground; black or dark grey gives a more graphic edge. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades the colour over decades.
