The story of the bird
On 23 February 1944, the Mississippi legislature voted unanimously to make the Northern Mockingbird the official state bird - a choice championed by the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs. The state’s position between the Mississippi River flyway and the Gulf of Mexico gives it a bird list that spans bottomland warblers, Gulf Coast shorebirds, endangered cranes, and trans-continental migrants that landfall at the barrier islands after crossing open water.

The print
