The story of the bird
The Black-backed Woodpecker is the woodpecker of the burned forest, a bird most people never see, and that scarcity is part of its appeal on a wall. It wears a glossy solid-black back with no white barring at all, a clean field mark that separates it from every other North American woodpecker, and the male carries a single bright-yellow cap that is the one flash of colour against the dark plumage. It works the charred pines and dead conifers of the north woods and the western mountains, prising beetle larvae from under scorched bark, and for a birder it is the prize of the burn, the bird you travel to find. As fine art it makes a quietly distinctive piece for a cabin, a study or a woodland home, and a knowing gift for the birder or naturalist who already knows what it means to find one.
