The story of the bird
Nuttall’s Woodpecker is the trim, neatly barred woodpecker of California’s oak woodlands, a small black-and-white bird that a Californian birder knows as a local specialty. Its back is finely marked with even black-and-white barring, its face is cleanly striped, and the male carries a bright red patch on the back of the crown. It works the oaks and streamside trees of the coast ranges and foothills, and it is found almost nowhere else, which is exactly what makes it a considered piece for anyone with roots in California.
That tidy, patterned plumage gives it a quiet, decorative appeal on a wall, a soft black-and-white study that settles into a calm, traditional or natural room without competing with it.
