The story of the bird
The Black Rosy Finch is a bird of the highest, coldest ground in the American West, nesting on alpine talus and snowfield edges above the treeline where few other songbirds venture. The dark, sooty body gives way to a rose-pink wash on the belly, rump and wings, a quiet colour that glows against the grey rock. In winter the flocks drop to lower valleys, and for a birder a rosy-finch at the feeder is a hard-won prize.
