The Brown-capped Rosy Finch is the rarest and most range-restricted of the three rosy-finches, a bird almost entirely of the Colorado high country, nesting on the alpine tundra of the southern Rockies above 12,000 feet. It lacks the grey crown of its cousins, so the rich brown of the head runs unbroken into the rose-pink flush of the wings and belly. Reaching it means climbing to where the air is thin, which makes a Brown-capped Rosy Finch a genuine trophy for the birders who pursue it.
