The story of the bird

The Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) is the largest duck in the northern hemisphere, a heavy sea duck of cold coasts and rocky islands. The drake is boldly cut in clean black and white with a soft green wash on the nape and a wedge-shaped bill that flows straight into the forehead. It is the bird behind eiderdown: for centuries the female’s breast down has been gathered from nests to fill the warmest quilts made, a tradition still carefully kept on some northern coasts. A handsome, historied print.

The plate holds the bird in true proportion on a warm cream ground, rendered in a contemporary Audubon-inspired natural-history style with a soft paper-grain finish. Waterfowl art with real weight for a coastal home, a lodge or a lake house.

Each print is made to order. You can change or cancel it within 12 hours of ordering. After that it goes into production and can no longer be cancelled, though we will always put right anything that arrives damaged.
