The story of the bird
The Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) is one of the most improbably marked ducks in the world. The drake is slate blue, patterned with bold white crescents and lines edged in black, with chestnut flanks: a bird that looks painted rather than plumaged, and takes its name from the costumed harlequin of old theatre. It is a duck of moving water, wintering along rough rocky coasts and breeding on fast mountain streams, diving through white water that would defeat most birds. It is a show-stopper of the waterfowl set, and a knowing choice for the birder or collector who already loves it.
