The story of the bird
The Elegant Trogon (Trogon elegans) is the bird that draws birders to the mountain canyons of southern Arizona, the northern edge of a tropical family that reaches up out of Mexico into the Southwest. The male is a quiet marvel: a coppery, metallic green across the back and head, a clean white band at the breast, and a deep rose-red belly, with a finely barred grey-and-white tail held long below the perch. It has the refined, upright poise of the trogons, a bird that sits still in the shade of a sycamore and rewards the patient watcher who knows where to look.
