The story of the bird
A Gentoo Penguin, upright and composed on a sea-worn rock, with the two field marks that set the species apart: the bright orange-red bill and the white bonnet that runs over the crown and meets at each eye. Of the brush-tailed penguins this is the largest, and underwater the fastest of all penguins, clocked at over twenty miles an hour when it chases fish through sub-Antarctic swells.
On the page the appeal is the contrast: the dense black back against the clean white front, the orange bill as the single warm note, the whole bird rendered with the same patient attention the rest of the collection gives a warbler or a finch. A penguin holds a room. This one does it quietly.
