The story of the bird
The Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) is the elegant sea duck of the far north, a diver of cold coastal waters and Arctic tundra lakes. The drake wears a striking pied pattern of black, white and warm brown that shifts between summer and winter, finished by the two long, slender tail feathers that give the bird its name and its line. It is among the deepest-diving of all ducks, dropping many metres for shellfish and small prey, and one of the most vocal, its yodelling call carrying across the water.
