The story of the bird
Two plates for a nursery, chosen because they are tender without being twee. The Emperor Penguin family, two adults with a grey downy chick held between them, and the penguin chicks in their woolly crèche down: parenthood and infancy, drawn straight, with none of the cartoon softening a children’s room usually gets.
This is the case for hanging real natural history in a child’s room rather than nursery-aisle pastels. The emperors raise their young in the coldest winter on the planet, the male fasting for nearly four months with the egg on his feet. The chicks survive by huddling in their thousands. Both facts are true, both are gentle, and a child grows up with two beautiful birds on the wall that turn out, years later, to mean something.
The palette is soft on purpose: the gold of the adult ear-patches, the slate-grey of the down, the warm cream ground shared with every other plate in the shop. The two are sized and styled to hang as a pair, side by side over a cot or a changing table, or one above the other in a narrow space.
