The story of the bird
Three plates, the three penguins most people picture when they picture the south. The Emperor, largest of them all, drawn with its family and chick. The King, second largest and the most richly coloured, with its orange teardrop ear-patches. And the Adelie, the small graphic tuxedo bird that nests further south than anything else alive. Together they are the classic Antarctic line-up, scaled large to small, gold to black-and-white.
A trio is the most forgiving wall arrangement there is. Three across a mantel, three down a stairwell, three in a row above a desk: the eye reads three as balanced where two can feel unfinished and six needs a whole wall. These three are built for it, sharing the cream ground and the Audubon-style hand so they hold together as a set while each bird keeps its own character, the warm gold of the King against the clean black of the Adelie, the family group of the Emperor anchoring the middle.
It is the set to start with. The fullest expression of the penguin family short of the complete six, and the easiest to place in an ordinary room.
