The story of the bird
The Spectacled Eider (Somateria fischeri) is the rarest and most remarkable of the eiders, a sea duck of the remote Bering Sea coasts. The drake carries a pale sea-green head marked by the large white eye patches ringed in black that give the bird its name, a look no other duck shares. It spends the winter in dense flocks on openings in the pack ice, far from any shore, and is a threatened, closely watched species: a collector’s bird and a knowing choice for the serious birder.
