The story of the bird
A Toco Toucan, the largest of all the toucans, perched on a mossy branch among bromeliads with that great bill held level. The bill is the most recognisable feature of any tropical bird, and it is in fact featherlight, a honeycomb of keratin over a thin bony frame, used to reach fruit on branches too slender to climb and to flick food back into the throat. It also sheds heat: the bird runs blood through it to cool down in the South American warmth.
For a wall it is bold graphic shape and colour, the deep blue-black plumage, the white bib, the band of red beneath the tail, and that great orange bill the eye goes to first. Drawn in the Audubon manner it reads as a study rather than a cartoon, which makes it a refined talking point rather than a novelty.
