The story of the bird
The Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) is the largest native waterfowl in North America and the heaviest bird on the continent capable of flight, a male spanning more than two metres wing to wing. It carries itself accordingly: the long white neck held in a straight, deliberate line, the all-black bill, the slow beat of wings that once nearly vanished from the wild. Reduced to a few dozen birds in the lower states by the early twentieth century, it was brought back by protection and reintroduction, and now returns each year to the northern lakes and rivers. Swans mate for life, which is much of why they carry the meaning they do.
The plate holds the bird in true proportion on a warm cream ground, the white plumage set against the pale field so the black bill and the soft grey wing shadows read as the only marks.
