The story of the bird
The Cassia Crossbill is one of the newest birds on the North American list, recognised as its own species only in 2017. It lives in a single corner of the world, the lodgepole pine forests of the South Hills and Albion Mountains of southern Idaho, where it has evolved a heavier bill to work the local cones and stays put year-round rather than wandering like other crossbills. That combination, a bird found nowhere else and confirmed only recently, makes it a true collector’s species. The male is a warm brick-red, the crossed bill clear in profile. This plate holds one on a warm cream ground, drawn in true proportion, a knowing piece for the serious birder.
