About the bird
The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few North American songbirds that can survive almost entirely on fruit, moving nomadically from one fruiting tree to the next. The waxy red droplets at the tips of its secondary feathers grow more numerous with age, signalling condition to prospective mates.
The Audubon tradition found the waxwing worth close study in the 1820s. It still is.
