About the bird
Sialia sialis is a small thrush that needs fields with scattered trees, fence posts and a nesting cavity, all three of which grew scarcer through much of the twentieth century. The female builds the nest and incubates the eggs while the male guards the territory and brings food. Pairs often stay together across seasons.
The nest plate was a favourite of the Audubon-tradition illustrators: the full courtship narrative of a species told in a single, held moment.
