About the bird
The Eastern Bluebird nearly disappeared from much of its range in the mid twentieth century as orchards gave way to farmland and starlings claimed its nest cavities. Volunteers brought it back with nest boxes built to a 38-millimetre entrance hole, just large enough for a bluebird and too small for a starling. The male in this plate weighs roughly 30 grams and will raise two or three broods in a season.
