The Hooded Oriole follows the palms. Wherever fan palms grow in southern California, Arizona, or Texas, Icterus cucullatus is likely present, weaving its hanging nest directly into the underside of a palm frond or suspended from the drooping tips of eucalyptus or willow. The relationship between the Hooded Oriole and the California fan palm is one of those ecological pairings that, once known, makes the palm itself feel different: occupied, purposeful.
The male is warm orange-yellow - a colour that reads more like amber or saffron than the orange-red of the Baltimore or the deeper chestnut of the Orchard. Against this warmth, the black face and bib are striking, and the two white wing bars complete the pattern. He is a slender, long-tailed bird, agile enough to move through palm fronds and probe flowers for nectar with a slightly decurved bill.
The Hooded Oriole is one of the earliest returning migrants in the West, arriving in California gardens in late March or April. The male sings a sweet, whistled song - chattier and less fluted than the Baltimore’s - from high in a palm or eucalyptus. Once established in a suburban garden with palms, pairs often return to the same tree year after year.
The range has expanded northward over the past fifty years as palm planting in California gardens has extended the nesting habitat. The Hooded Oriole is now a regular sight in Los Angeles neighbourhoods where it was absent a generation ago. Urban palms, unexpected rewilding.
