The story of the bird

A male Cardinalis cardinalis perched on a berried holly branch, in the restrained palette of John James Audubon’s Birds of America. A natural fit for the holiday mantel, and a gift that stays on the wall well past December.

The print

Printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm fine-art paper, in three sizes from 8x10 to 24x30, prints from $39. Framed options available.

About the bird

The cardinal is the state bird of seven US states, more than any other species, and he earned that through constancy: he does not migrate, and he does not change colour with the seasons. The berried branch matters too. Cardinals are carotenoid colourists, and the fruit they eat in autumn is the raw material of the red they wear in March.

A print for the bird that stays.

Symbolism & meaning

In North American folklore, a cardinal is a visitor from heaven, a sign a loved one is near. It is why the red bird appears on so many Christmas cards and sympathy gifts: the one visitor winter cannot take away.
