About the bird
Sitta carolinensis is the only common woodland bird in North America that descends a tree trunk head-first, letting it spot insects in bark crevices that upward-climbing birds miss. The largest of the North American nuthatches, it weighs around 20 grams, and pairs hold their territory year-round. The two birds at your winter feeder are the same pair that nested in the wood in May.
