The bird
The American Oystercatcher works the tidal flats and shell beds of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, using its blade-like bill to pry open mussels, clams and oysters. Loud, striking and strongly territorial, it is a signature bird of healthy coastal shellfish beds. The dark hood and back against the white underparts give it a graphic, almost designed quality that carries beautifully onto a wall.
