The Black Skimmer is the most graphic bird on the coast: crisp black above, clean white below, and a long, knife-thin bill dipped in red and black. Its low-palette, high-contrast shape makes it a designer’s shorebird, the natural choice for a striking coastal set or a single strong piece over a console.
The bird
The Black Skimmer is the only bird in North America whose lower bill is longer than the upper. It feeds by flying low and fast with that lower blade slicing the surface, snapping the bill shut the instant it touches a fish. It nests in colonies on open sand and sandbars along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The sharp division of black and white, broken only by the red bill, gives the print its clean, modern line.
