The bird
The Atlantic Puffin nests in burrows on cliffs and grassy islands from Maine and Newfoundland across the North Atlantic, spending the winter far out on the open ocean. Its famous bill is at its most colourful in the breeding season, then sheds its bright outer plates for a plainer winter face. A wonderful diver, it uses its wings underwater to chase fish and can hold a beakful of several at once. That colour and character make it the puffin most people picture, and the one that reads best on a wall.
