The bird
The Bar-tailed Godwit is famous for the longest non-stop flight recorded of any bird, crossing the Pacific from Alaska to New Zealand without landing. On the ground it works estuaries and mudflats, sweeping its slightly upturned bill through soft sediment for worms and shellfish. Barred tail, streaked warm brown back, and in spring a deep rufous underside: it is a bird of subtle, earthy colour that sits well in a restrained, natural palette.
