The bird
The California Gull breeds inland around the lakes and marshes of the West, then moves to the Pacific coast for winter. It is a medium-sized gull, soft grey above and white below, with yellow legs and a red-and-black spot on the bill. Famous in Utah for descending on a plague of crickets that threatened the pioneers’ crops, it carries real regional meaning. Its clean grey-and-white palette makes an easy, restful piece for a coastal or lakeside wall.
