The story of the bird
The Dunlin is the classic small sandpiper of the winter shore, its down-curved bill and neat, rounded form the shape most people picture when they think of a wader on the flats. In breeding dress it carries a bold black belly patch against a rusty back, a surprising splash of pattern that makes the print more interesting than its quiet size suggests.
The bird
The Dunlin gathers in vast, wheeling flocks on estuaries and mudflats, one of the most numerous shorebirds of the northern coasts. It feeds with a steady, sewing-machine probing of the mud. In spring the rufous back and the distinctive black belly give it real character; in winter it turns a soft, plain grey. That seasonal black belly patch makes the breeding plate a small, striking piece for a coastal wall.
