The story of the bird
Few small birds carry as much meaning as the Piping Plover. This pale, sand-coloured little wader is one of the great conservation stories of the American beach, which makes its print a genuinely considered gift for a beach lover, a birder or anyone who has helped protect the shore. The bird
The Piping Plover nests on open sand and gravel beaches along the Atlantic coast, the Great Lakes and the northern plains, so pale it seems to vanish against dry sand. Its beach-nesting habit has placed it at the centre of decades of coastal conservation, and roped-off nesting areas on summer beaches are a familiar sight because of it. Sandy-grey above and white below, with a narrow dark breast band and a small orange bill, it is one of the gentlest, most meaningful shorebirds to hang.
