The bird
The Purple Sandpiper spends the winter on wave-washed rocks and jetties along the North Atlantic, further north than almost any other shorebird, feeding among the barnacles and weed as the sea breaks over it. Dark slate-grey with the faint purplish gloss that names it, and warm orange at the bill base and legs, it is a stocky, cold-hardy bird. Its muted, wintry palette makes a quiet, characterful print for a coastal room.
