The story of the bird
The Sanderling is the little bird everyone has watched, the pale wader that chases the retreating waves and scurries back ahead of the next. Its clean, pale grey-and-white palette carries all that calm, restless movement of the shore, which makes it one of the easiest, most soothing prints to live with, in a bright bedroom, a bathroom or a coastal hallway.
The bird
The Sanderling breeds in the high Arctic and winters on sandy beaches around the world, where it is the familiar bird running at the very edge of the surf, feeding on tiny creatures churned up by the waves. In winter it is the palest of the small sandpipers, silvery grey above and clean white below; in spring it warms to a rusty head and breast. That soft, wave-washed colouring makes it the most calming shorebird to hang, and a natural anchor for a neutral coastal set.
