The Upland Sandpiper is the shorebird that left the shore, a bird of open grassland with a small, dove-like head, a long neck and large, dark eyes. It is a print for the prairie as much as the coast, an elegant, unusual choice whose warm-buff colour and upright poise suit a calm, natural room or a country home.
The bird
The Upland Sandpiper breeds across the grasslands and prairies of North America, where it is often seen perched on a fence post, wings raised on landing, giving a long, bubbling whistle. Slender and long-tailed, with a small head and a gentle expression, it looks quite unlike the waders of the water’s edge. Mottled buff and brown throughout, it makes a soft, distinctive plate that reads as much of the open country as of the shore.
